If you live in Northern Virginia, you have probably wondered whether you can order from a Washington, DC shop and have it brought across the river. It is one of the most common questions we get, and the short answer surprises a lot of people. This guide explains how weed delivery DC to Virginia actually works, what the law says on each side of the Potomac, and the simplest way to get flower, edibles and vapes delivered locally in Northern Virginia.
Do DC Dispensaries Deliver to Virginia?
No. Licensed DC dispensaries do not deliver to Virginia. There are three reasons:
- State lines. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, so moving it from one state (or DC) into another is prohibited, even when both places allow adults to possess it.
- DC licenses stop at the DC border. DC's licensed medical dispensaries are regulated by the DC Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA), and their licenses only cover sales and delivery inside the District.
- Virginia has its own rules. Virginia regulates its own medical cannabis program, and an out-of-state shop has no license to sell or deliver here.
So if you have been searching for a DC dispensary delivery to Virginia, you will not find a licensed one. Any shop claiming to "ship" across the river is taking a legal risk, and so are you when you receive the package.
Can You Get Weed Delivered in Virginia?
Here is where it helps to know how Virginia's laws are set up:
- Since July 1, 2021, adults 21 and older in Virginia may legally possess up to 1 ounce of cannabis and grow up to four plants at home.
- Virginia has not yet opened licensed recreational stores. Lawmakers have debated a retail market for several years, so check the current status before you order.
- Registered medical cannabis patients can buy from Virginia's licensed medical dispensaries, and some of them offer delivery to patients.
In practice, most adults searching for marijuana delivery Virginia options, or weed delivery to Virginia from DC, rely on local delivery services instead of anything shipped from another state. That is also the honest answer to the popular search for recreational dispensaries that ship to VA: shipping cannabis by mail or courier across state lines is not legal, which is why local delivery is the route most people take.
